  Wendy Wasserstein’s An American Daughter will runJuly 23 – Sept. 6 (opening Aug. 11) at the Signature Center, directed by Sarna Lapine.

  At the center of the play is a brilliant, accomplished woman, poised to step onto the national stage, until a seemingly minor personal oversight ignites a media frenzy that threatens to dismantle her reputation and shatter her dream of national public service. As the story unfolds, Wasserstein deftly reveals the unfair standards placed on women in public life alongside society’s fear of ambitious, strong women. Exploring the dilemma facing smart, powerful women, the prescient Wasserstein shines a light on not only just how fractured the American dream can be but also how fundamental fairly attaining that dream is to the future of the American experiment.

   The world premiere of How Shakespeare Saved My Life,  written & performed by Jacob Ming-Trent, will run June 9 – July 5 at DC’s Folger Theatre, written & performed by ed by Tony Taccone.

 

  The play dives into Ming-Trent’s turbulent youth. Blending Shakespeare with the voices of Basquiat, Biggie, and Tupac, the piece reveals how art helped a young artist find his identity, his purpose, and his path forward.

  A multi-media play exploring the life and art of this genius of La Belle Époque. On the grounds of her French country estate Mary Cassatt burns her early paintings. What led this celebrated American Impressionist to destroy such an important part of her legacy? In an age when men dominated the art world, Mary Cassatt made her mark in the salons of Paris, alongside great masters like Degas and Renoir. Her paintings celebrated the dignity and deeper meaning of women’s inner lives.
