Jason Graae‘s fabulous interview with Tregoney Shepherd:

1) Hello Broadway’s Tregoney Shepherd! Let’s start with the most important question- how did you meet me?

I met You for the first time on tour with Wicked and you fell in love with me when I told you I was a huge fan of your work on the Fifty Million Frenchmen CD.

2) I’ve gotten this question a lot- what the hell kind of a name is Tregoney Shepherd? (I can ask this since people ask me what the hell kind of name is Graae?)

Tregoney is the name of a town in Cornwall England. My mother, who was British and father saw my name on the front of a bus and the rest is history.

3) Tell us briefly your Broadway credits.

Madame Thenardier  (Les Miserables), Vicar and u/s for the Queen and Stepmother (Bad Cinderella), Midwife and u/s for Madame Morrible (WICKED), and Wardrobe Mistress/Confidante (Phantom of the Opera)

4) Bad Cinderella is infamous! I hope you’ll talk about it in our show. You’ve done 2 shows with Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber! Any good anecdotes?

My favorite memory from Phantom of the Opera is when I truly learned the meaning of the show must go on! An actor threw up onstage and nothing stopped. Ballerinas danced through it, Phantom and Christine crawled through it until there was a scene where a drop covered it and those of us behind it saw stage managers on there knees madly wiping the floor to get it up before the next scene.

5) What has it been like rehearsing with me for this show? You in NYC and me in LA?

I love rehearsing long distance with you because it means we don’t just talk by phone or text, we actually FaceTime, which gives me such pleasure.

6) You are doing a tribute to your friend, Broadway and Cabaret composer Steve Lutvak who just passed. How did you know Steve?

Steve Lutvak and I met more than 20 years ago. He was my first vocal coach in NY and quickly became a fast friend. I actually used him and his journey to Broadway composer as the inspiration for my Doctoral thesis.

7) We first put a show together for a Broadway Cares fundraiser while on the Wicked tour in San Diego at Martini’s. That’s not a question but whatever.

8) You are one of the most versatile performers I know. What are you the most excited about getting to perform with me?

I love performing with you because I get so much pleasure watching you perform that it is just joyful to share the space with someone who loves what they do. It doesn’t feel like work at all, we just seem to celebrate each other.

Sweeeeet! I feel the same about you Treg. Thank you for taking the time to answer these brilliant questions Tregoney! I can’t wait to see you in person Wednesday!

Jason & Tregoney’s new show, Two’s Company, will take place Sat. Dec. 2 at 8 PM at North Hollywood’s El Portal Theatre, with music direction by Gerald Sternbach.
