“TINA,” a Tina Turner documentary, will premiere Mar. 27 at 8 PM on HBO.
A reveling and intimate look at the life and career of Tina Turner, charting her improbable rise to early fame, her personal and professional struggles throughout her life and her even more improbable resurgence as a global phenomenon in the 1980s. The film features insightful interviews with Tina herself, conducted in her hometown of Zurich, and with those closest to her. Also included are never-before-seen footage, audio tapes and personal photos, telling a deep and absorbing story about the queen of rock ‘n’ roll in all its complexity.

Lincoln Center has announced Restart Stages – an outdoor performing arts center with 10 outdoor performances and rehearsal spaces – to help kickstart the performing arts sector and NYC’s revival. This is a welcoming and safe place for live performances, family activities, and civic engagement. The program will launch on World Health Day (Apr. 7), with a special performance for healthcare workers.
All offerings will occur outdoors with safety protocols in place for artists, audiences, and staff.

“Tango The Musical by Sergei Tumas” will stream Mar. 25-28 at LA’s Center Theatre Group.
Featuring a cast of 11 world-champion Argentine tango couples, the musical celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Argentinian composer and pionerr of tango nuevo, Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992), with a cultural blend of classical, jazz, rock and folk music and dance. This is the story of Los Desparecidos, those who disappeared during Argentina’s Dirty War, which began in 1976. It follows an angel, Romeo, who falls in love with Isabella and goes through a journey of varying physical, psychological and spiritual states, all rooted in Greek mythology and presented through the dramatic language of the Argentine tango – the eternal dance.

“Places Please,” a new film by Elisabeth Seldes Annacone, directed by Michael Cristofer, is currently in development, with production expected to begin this summer.

The film, a “love letter” and “valentine” to theatre artists “who fight to survive, and triumph,” will follow Broadway star Lillian Hall, who throughout her stage career has never missed a performance. But as her latest show, a revival of The Cherry Orchard, approaches, her resilience is questioned, and she must confront the consequences of neglecting that which she gave up.

Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film “Spirited Away” will be adapted for Broadway, written & directed by John Caird. The world premiere is expected to premiere at Tokyo’s Imperial Theatre.. The film, which earned 34 awards of its 37 nominations (including the Oscar for Best Animated Feature), held the title for the highest-grossing movie ever in Japan for 19 years. Broadway dates TBA.
The story of Chihiro, a 10-year-old girl who moves with her parents to their new home, where they lose themselves in a mysterious world of fantastic spirits, ruled over by the sorceress Yubaba, who turns Chihiro’s parents into pigs. After a series of bizarre and dangerous challenges, including the loss of her identity, Chihiro must use her wits to survive in this strange place and return to the human world.

Reports Webber, “We’ve got to get theatre open up and down the country, everywhere, for all of the actors and the musicians and the technicians whose livelihood has been put completely on hold now for a year.”
