Reviews for sandblasted at Off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre:

New York Times (Jesse Green): As the lights go up, we discover two women half-buried in sand — which is one more woman than stingy Samuel Beckett offered in Happy Days. But Beckett’s semi-subterranean Winnie faced only the terrors of eternity. For Angela and Odessa, the main characters in Charly Evon Simpson’s sandblasted,… the problem is closer to home… Because less than a minute into the action, it is that appendage that falls off Angela’s body like an overripe fruit from a tree… For me, it tries too hard… The actors, under the direction of Summer L. Williams, are all enjoyable, making the most of characterful writing when it’s provided, and doing what they can with the big gulps of self-conscious poetry Simpson has otherwise asked them to deliver.

Theatrely (Joe Sims): …In a stark space half-filled with sand, two Black women emerge from behind beach umbrellas. They shake sand out of every crevice. Then, one of the women’s arms falls clean off of her body. “Oh shit,” she sighs, seeming mostly annoyed. “Not now.” … Sadly, the evening won’t hit the same heights of bizarre wonder again in the 100 minutes that follow. sandblasted follows Angela (Brittany Bellizeare) and Odessa (Marinda Anderson) in a sand-clogged dystopia of unspecified time/place… meandering narrative… Plot isn’t the focus of Simpson’s absurdist work, but what story there is proves difficult to follow… Language is meant to be the focus rather than plot, and in this regard the play is more successful…

Theatre Reviews Limited (David Roberts): …Charly Evon Simpson’s inspiration for her narrative is clearly rooted in absurdism… Under Summer L. Williams’s meticulous direction, the cast portrays the characters and their conflicts with precision, honesty, and authenticity. If there is any problem with sandblasted it is the script itself. From the opening scene, it is obvious that the play’s action is episodic and not linear. The difficulty is that many of the scenes seem repetitive or overly written.  A few scenes even seem unnecessary… The transition to the final scene where Angels and Odessa reunite with Adah seems contrived and the scene itself seems unnecessary…
