Two by Synge: In the Shadow of the Glen… &… The Tinker’s Wedding (Apr. 13 – May 22, opening Apr. 24), by John Millington Synge, directed by Charotte Moore. Casting TBA.
In the Shadow of the Glen opens in the midst of a storm as a Tramp seeking lodging for the night finds the downtrodden young Nora Burke preparing an impromptu wake. Her lay-about husband Dan has died suddenly, but not without cursing Nora that none should touch his body. But when Nora leaves to call for the young neighbor Michael, we learn that there is more to the story …… The Tinker’s Wedding presents Sarah Casey, the Beauty of Ballinacree, who has aspirations to be married by a priest to the tinker Michael Byrne. RIP: Tony Walton, beloved set and costume designer, has died of complications from a recent stroke at the age of 87.
Tony began his career in England, an then split his time between London and New York. He married this childhood sweetheart, Julie Andrews, in 1959.
Walton received Tony awards for the original productions of Pippin and The House of Blue Leaves, as well as the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls. He also received tony nominations for The Apple Tree, Chicago, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, The Real Thing, The Front Page, Anything Goes, Lend Me a Tenor, Grand Hotel, The Will Rogers Follies, She Loves Me, Steel Pier, and Uncle Vanya.
Of his 20 films, “Mary Poppins,” “The Boy Friend,” “The Wiz,” and “Murder on the Orient Express earned him five Academy Award nominations, with a win for Bob Fosse’s “All That Jazz,” and a 1985 Emmy Award for the televised version of “Death of a Salesman.”
Tony’s final Broadway credit was the musical adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities in 2008. He was elected to the Theater Hall of Fame in 1991.
A private service is planned in Sag Harbor, and a public celebration will be held in the coming weeks.
