  Steppenwolf Theatre is currently streaming the world premiere production of Vivian J.O. Barnes’ Duchess! Duchess! Duchess!, directed by Weyni Mengesha

Sydney Charles and Celeste M. Cooper

The piece is loosely inspired by the struggles of Meghan Markle and the British royal family, and uses the monarchy to investigate how society’s institutions of power affect Black women. The play is set on the eve of a royal wedding and imagines a meeting between a Duchess who has just given birth to an heir, and a Soon-to-Be-Duchess, whom she is coaching on the rules required to join the family.

The series centers on Barbara, a self-centered boomer who shows up at her estranged daughter Sarah’s house hoping to live off the family’s money, but forms an unexpected bond with her progressive granddaughter who’s quick to challenge her on their differing views – of which there a plenty.
